Sinus infections. We have all had them, we still get them and at times, they can wage war against our body.
There are so many options out there today ranging from natural remedies and over-the-counter medication to prescribed oral and nasal sprays.
What is a sinus infection? It is when an infection occurs inside the sinus cavities or the cavities become aggravated. This can be caused by a number of reasons including allergens and pathogens. The lining of the sinuses become inflamed, swell and can impede the drainage of mucus while at the same time actually boosting mucus production. This can and will more than likely lead to stuffiness, congestion and a painful sinus headache (healthwatchlist). It is estimated that 35 million Americans suffer from sinus infections every year, making it the fifth most common medical diagnosis for which antibiotics are prescribed costing the country over $11 billion annually (DrAxe).
Believe it or not, there are many natural ways to treat a sinus infection. Some of these include the foods you eat (or don’t), nasal irrigation (think neti pot), essential oils (lavender, peppermint, tea tree oil) , humidifiers, certain supplements like curcumin, vitamin C and D (to name a few) and chiropractic care.
What you don’t want to do is limit your body’s innate ability to heal itself. Taking any kind of medication that suppresses your symptoms like a cough or sneeze will keep the infection inside and slows the healing process. Your body is an amazing vessel which has an innate intelligence to heal itself, so you must allow for it to do so. Instead of filling your body with chemicals that suppress its natural function be proactive. Take the steps necessary to improve its ability to heal quickly.
How can you prevent yourself from getting a sinus infection? Stay on top of your health by eating fresh fruits and vegetables, exercising daily, having an attitude of gratitude and get adjusted by your chiropractor. By doing this, your energy, vitality and inborn ability to heal will increase.
