Concussion Rehabilitation
Physical therapy can help address the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome. This occurs when concussion symptoms last beyond the expected recovery time from the initial injury.
What is a concussion?
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury due to a direct hit to the head or jolt to the body that forces the brain to move rapidly back and forth within the skull, causing a chemical imbalance and possibly damaging brain cells. A concussion can occur at any age, and common causes include:
- Sports Injuries (including contact and non-contact sports)
- Fall Injuries in Seniors
- Motor Vehicle Accidents/Whiplash
- Playground Accidents
- Workplace Injury
After suffering a concussion, you may have the following symptoms:
- headaches/neck pain
- dizziness or light-headedness
- sensitivity to light or noise
- difficulty with balance or coordination impairments
- problems with concentrating/memory
- blurred/ double vision, making it hard to read
- fatigue/feeling “foggy”
- behavioral changes
- changes in sleep patterns
Why Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy can help address the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome. This occurs when concussion symptoms last beyond the expected recovery time from the initial injury.
For years, complete rest was considered the best approach for concussion management. Recent studies show that a more active approach, focusing on physical therapy, is more effective than prolonged rest. Research also shows that starting functional rehabilitation a few days after a concussion drastically improved recovery and decreased post-concussion syndrome chances.
