Let’s face it, even now that they’re back to in-person learning, most likely, this year’s school year is still bogged down in the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic and students – young children and teens – are feeling it. That likely means teachers and parents are, too.
What can chiropractic do to help youth during this trying time? The answer is…a lot!
Addressing the Central Nervous System
Chiropractic adjustments performed here at Core Health Chiropractic have a significant impact on the central nervous system. They aim to calm, relax and release tension. They help stiff necks and shoulders to relax. They aid in taking deep, full breaths. They assist in banishing headaches and brain fog. They help relieve the fear and anxiety running rampant right now. Better yet? The chiropractic process is a natural one.
Signs of Stress in Children
While a teen might be able to communicate his or her stress or anxiety in navigating the pandemic and the school environment and its related responsibilities, this is often difficult for younger children. It may even be a source of embarrassment for children of any age. That’s why, as parents, it’s important to look for signs if you suspect something isn’t quite right.
Physical signs of stress include: headaches, upset stomach, chest pain, heart palpitations or increased heart rate, insomnia, nightmares, bedwetting, decreased appetite, comfort eating or binging.
Emotional signs of stress may come in the form of anxiety, mood swings, restlessness, clinginess, new or recurring fears, increased crying, anger, stubbornness, aggression, decreased concentration or motivation, overreacting emotionally, regressing to early childhood behaviors (thumb sucking, nail biting, sleeping with a stuffed animal or other aid), social isolation, withdrawal or an unwillingness to participate in activities your child once found enjoyable.
It’s important to talk to your child and to be open and supportive. Ask how he or she is feeling and listen to their answers. Remember to stay calm and not to judge their responses. Finding healthy coping methods can be immensely helpful and we are here for you.
We also recognize that parenting a child under stress is stressful, too! We encourage both the parent and child to seek out options for natural relief, like chiropractic care. Let’s see what it can do for you!
