Get Healthy at Home this Winter

Most Americans are too sedentary without throwing the winter season and a pandemic like COVID-19 into the mix.

So, it should come as no surprise that getting moving is more important than ever. The key is to start with a plan that’s simple and manageable. Consider these tips from Core Health Chiropractic in Wyomissing, Berks County, PA.

Easy Does It.

Rather than beginning by committing huge chunks of time to lift weights or logging miles upon miles on the treadmill or stationary bike, bite off something easier to chew. Instead, commit to 10 minutes of stretching or yoga when you wake up, 15 minutes of light cardio at lunchtime (it could even be dancing around your kitchen!), or even 50 sit-ups before retiring to bed. You might even choose to do a couple of these things. At first thought, it may seem too insignificant to make an impact, but combine sensible eating with 1,500 sit-ups in a month’s time and you’re likely to feel, if not see, some results.

Get Out.

Believe it or not, too much time cooped up inside can lead to depression, even during the colder winter months when it’s natural to want to do a bit more hibernating. Commit to walking around the block, or if you have to run errands, pick a socially-distanced parking spot that’s a bit further away and add some more steps to your day. The fresh air and movement will do your body, and mental state, a world of good.

Take up Cooking.

You likely have more free time at home, so why not learn a new skill? A particularly useful one is cooking with seasonal, fresh ingredients. Don’t fall back on pre-prepared boxed and canned foods out of convenience. All the sodium and preservatives found in them are not necessarily your friend. Clean, lean, and green eating, however, is. Not only can cooking with fresh ingredients yield a delicious meal, but it can also be healthful for your body by providing a wealth of nutrients like vitamins, fiber, and proteins. And you might be surprised at just how much you enjoy yourself in the process.
