Perhaps more than ever before, athletes – both professional and recreational – as well as accident victims, are suffering from and being diagnosed with concussions.
In fact, the Center for Disease Control estimates that up to 3.8 million concussions happen each year in the United States.
Is it a concussion?
Just what is a concussion and why is it important to seek treatment? A concussion is essentially a traumatic brain injury. Sound serious? It absolutely can be and should be addressed with immediate medical attention. Symptoms of a concussion can be physical, cognitive, emotional, and/or sleep-related. They can happen as a result of a sports injury or stemming from a car accident or even a trip or fall.
You can have a concussion even if you have an experience such as those previously mentioned even without experiencing impact with another surface and without losing consciousness. Symptoms can come in the form of headaches, neck pain, feeling faint, blurry vision, nausea, and forgetfulness, to name a few. Emergency symptoms include worsening headaches, seizures, focal neurologic signs, the inability to be woken, repeated vomiting, slurred speech, increased confusion, numbness in the extremities, neck pain, an unusual behavior change, or change in consciousness. If you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms, head to the emergency room or call an ambulance.

We can help to evaluate sports injuries here at Core Health. We start by getting all the details of the patient’s injury and symptoms and then test cognitive functions including concentration, changes in emotions, and if there have been sleeping issues since the incident. If you suspect you or a loved one may have suffered a concussion, contact us right away to seek a diagnosis and plan any possible related necessary treatment.
